Cookie policy

There are two kinds of cookie here, and the difference matters. One is needed for the site to work at all. The other is optional, we ask before setting it, and nothing happens if you say no.

Always on

These do not track you and cannot be switched off, because without them the site cannot do what you asked it to.

Only if you agree

If you say no, nothing is loaded. This is worth being precise about, because many sites are not: the Google Analytics tag is not written into the page at all unless you have agreed. There is no request to Google waiting to be blocked, and no cookie set and then ignored.

What we deliberately do not use

Two things that are not cookies, but should be mentioned

Spam protection on the contact form. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which is loaded only when you start filling that form in — not on every page. If you never touch the form, nothing is requested from Google. When it does load, Google receives your IP address and some information about how you interact with the page, and uses it to tell people from bots. This is covered by Google's privacy policy and terms. We rely on our legitimate interest in not being flooded with spam, rather than consent, because it only runs on a form you have chosen to use and it is what allows that form to work safely.

Films. Some films are hosted on YouTube or Vimeo. Nothing is loaded from them until you press play on that particular film. YouTube films use the youtube-nocookie.com address and Vimeo films are asked not to track, which limits but does not eliminate what those companies see.

Changing your mind

Use Cookie settings at the foot of any page. Withdrawing is exactly as easy as agreeing, and takes effect immediately. You can also clear cookies in your browser, which resets everything — you will simply be asked again on your next visit. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat that as a no without asking.
